Tampa Bay provides the closest full-service deep-water ports to the Panama Canal with complete stevedoring, bunkering and ship repair facilities. More than 50 private terminals serve the two ports, along with more than two-dozen stevedores. Both non-union and International Longshoreman's Association labor provide services in the area.

The 12th largest cargo port in the nation and has the largest dockside cold storage facility in North America. The port of Tampa handles nearly half of all sea borne commerce that passes through the state and has several home ported passenger vessels, making it a major cruise port.
